ICAC launches online reading gala to disseminate probity messages to children

2020-12-12

The ICAC today (December 12) kicked off an online reading gala with an array of activities including reading of picture books, storytelling and handicrafts making to disseminate messages such as integrity and fairness to young children.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the “Reading for Integrity” online Reading Gala today, ICAC’s Director of Community Relations Ho Wai-chi remarked that instilling the value of integrity in younger generations had all along been one of the major tasks of the Commission.

“The ‘Reading for Integrity’ moral education programme is a new initiative of the Commission. Through partnering with parents and teachers, we hope to promote moral education through picture books produced by the ICAC. A series of training and publicity activities will also be hosted to reinforce the messages,” Mr Ho said.

Ho noted that instilling positive values such as honesty, fairness and responsibility at an early age would help children resist the temptations of corruption when they grew up and help foster a clean society.

Media programme host Karen Cheng Sui-man, who also attended today’s online kick-off ceremony, shared her experience in parent-child relationships as well as nurturing children. She also read a story to the young audience.

The “Reading for Integrity” online Reading Gala features various parenting activities including online workshops on picture book storytelling and a total of eight online reading sessions to be held today and tomorrow for parents and children. The ICAC had earlier sent material packs for DIY handicrafts to around 3,000 children by mail. Parents are also encouraged to download the templates from the programme’s dedicated website and complete the handicrafts with their children by watching the demonstration on the website.

Meanwhile, the “Reading for Integrity” colouring and painting activity launched earlier for kindergarten and primary school students was completed with an overwhelming response. Over 1,000 outstanding entries have been uploaded onto the programme’s website today.

Members of the public can visit the “Reading for Integrity” moral education programme (https://me.icac.hk/content/picturebook/) website to learn more about the various activities and download the moral education picture books.
