2004-12-17

The Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), Mr Raymond Wong Hung-chiu, met the deputy head of the Mainland's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) and briefed him on Hong Kong's latest anti-corruption work during his visit to the territory.

Mr Wang Zhenchuan, Deputy Procurator-General of SPP, had visited the ICAC earlier this week as part of his five-day visit to Hong Kong.

He was briefed on ICAC's achievements in combating corruption through the three-pronged approach of enforcement, prevention and education, and Hong Kong's corruption situation in recent years.

"The liaison and co-operation between the ICAC and SPP has become increasingly closer in recent years," said Mr Wong.

He added that since 2000, the SPP had taken up the liaison with the ICAC under the Mutual Case Assistance Scheme (MCAS) for corruption investigations outside the Guangdong Province. The MCAS is a reciprocal arrangement allowing anti-corruption agencies o n both sides to interview voluntary witnesses in each other's jurisdiction.

Mr Wang also met with the heads of ICAC's three departments –'96 Operations, Corruption Prevention and Community Relations, and toured the facilities of the Operations Department.

He noted that the anti-corruption agencies on both sides could further strengthen co-operation on the investigation, corruption prevention and education fronts.

During his stay in Hong Kong, Mr Wang also visited other policy bureaux and government departments before his departure today (Friday).
