Ex-worker in court for alleged bribery over employment of casual workers

A former waterproof testing worker of an engineering company appeared at the Eastern Magistracy today (Thursday) after being charged by the ICAC with soliciting and accepting a total of about $10,000 in bribes for referring casual workers to work for the company.

Ning Hang-yuen, 59, formerly employed by MIDI Aluminium Fabricator Limited (MIDI), who was charged on Tuesday (December 17), faced one count of agent soliciting an advantage and one of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Preve ntion of Bribery Ordinance.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges today. Principal Magistrate Ms Bina Chainrai adjourned the case to January 16 next year for a pre-trial review.

MIDI, which was specialised in the supply and installation of aluminium products such as windows and shelters, employed casual workers to perform on-site installation and testing of those products at construction sites.

At the material time, the defendant was employed by MIDI as a waterproof testing worker to work at a construction site in Sheung Wan.

The charges alleged that between March 12 and July 10 last year, the defendant, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, solicited and accepted a total of about $10,000 from 10 casual workers of MIDI as rewards for referring those workers to work fo r MIDI.

The defendant was granted cash bail of $5,000, and ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
