Frozen meat supplier in court for alleged bribery

A frozen meat supplier appeared at the Eastern Magistracy today (Friday) after being charged by the ICAC with offering advantages consisting of food products and red packets to the head chef of a restaurant for maintaining business relationship with it.

Ellen Lam Ching, 43, sole operator of Peony Company (PC), who was charged on Wednesday (February 26), faced one count of offering an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 9(2)(b) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

No plea was taken today. Principal Magistrate Ms Bina Chainrai adjourned the case to April 28 this year for mention.

At the material time, the defendant was the sole operator of PC, which was a frozen meat supplier of Uptown 90 (U90), a bar restaurant in Wan Chai.

The charge alleged that between July 1, 2011 and July 16, 2013, the defendant offered advantages consisting of food products and red packets with an approximate value of $5,650 to the head chef of U90 as rewards for his maintaining business relationship w ith PC.

The food products were said to include beef, oysters, frozen prawns, canned abalone, ricecakes, turnip cakes and mooncakes.

The defendant was granted cash bail of $5,000. She was also ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and reside at the reported address.

U90 had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.
