Footballers and manager charged for alleged match-fixing and illegal betting

Two former football players of an athletic association have been charged by the ICAC today (Wednesday) for their alleged roles in fixing the results of two football matches, with a former deputy team manager of the association accused of illegal betting.
Fan Weijun, 35, former assistant coach cum football player of the Happy Valley Athletic Association (HVAA), and Sasa Mus, 27, former football player of the HVAA, each face one count of conspiracy to defraud, contrary to the Common Law.
Hinson Leung, 26, former deputy football team manager of the HVAA, faces one count of betting with a bookmaker, contrary to Section 8 of the Gambling Ordinance.
The defendants will appear in the Eastern Magistracy at 9:30 am on Friday (July 4) for plea.
The case arose from corruption complaints. Subsequent ICAC enquiries revealed the above alleged offences.
At the material time, Fan was the assistant coach cum football player of the HVAA and Mus was one of its football players, while Leung was its deputy football team manager.
The football team of the HVAA was one of the 12 football teams competing in the Hong Kong First Division League (HKFDL) and the Senior Shield Championship (SSC) organised by the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) in the 2013/14 football season.
Fan is alleged to have conspired together with other persons to defraud the HVAA and the HKFA between December 7 and 8, 2013 by dishonestly not playing his best abilities in the SSC football match between the HVAA and the Sun Pegasus Football Club held on December 8, 2013.
Mus is alleged to have conspired together with Leung, Liao Siwei and other persons to defraud the HVAA and the HKFA on November 30, 2013 by dishonestly not playing his best abilities in the HKFDL football match between the HVAA and the Southern District F ootball Club held on the same day.
Leung is alleged to have placed bets on the HKFDL football match between the HVAA and the Sun Hei Sports Club held on January 5, 2014 through a bookmaking website with a bookmaker.
The HKFA and the HVAA have rendered full assistance to the ICAC in its investigation.
The defendants have been released on ICAC bail, pending their court appearance on Friday.
