2019-6-27
A former supervisor of a hotel, charged by the ICAC, admitted at the West Kowloon Magistracy today (June 27) that he had conspired with the operators of a frozen meat supplier to accept illegal rebates totalling about $24,000 in relation to the supply of foods to the hotel.
Chan Chiu-fai, 51, former supervisor of InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong (IGS), pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to accept advantages as an agent, contrary to Section 9(1)(b) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance and Section 159A of the Crimes Ordinance.
Acting Principal Magistrate Ms Ada Yim Shun-yee adjourned the case until July 12 for sentence, pending background and community service order reports. The defendant was granted cash bail.
The court heard that at the material time, the defendant worked as the supervisor of the Chinese barbecue section of IGS. He was responsible for preparing roasted meat dishes. In 2007, the defendant came to know the operators of a frozen porklings supplier when IGS began placing orders with it.
Since September 2016, the operators started to offer illegal rebates to the defendant for providing tip-off information about IGS’ comments on its food suppliers, including those in relation to the frozen porklings supplier.
Between September 2016 and December 2017, the defendant met the operators of the frozen porklings supplier on a number of occasions. On each occasion, he was given a rebate ranging from $1,500 to $3,300.
During the period, the defendant received a total sum of about $24,000 from the operators of the frozen porklings supplier, the court was told.
IGS had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation into the case.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Pius Chan.
