2024-2-4
To mark the golden jubilee of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), the Commission today (February 4) held the ICAC 50th Anniversary Running Gala, showcasing the organisation’s unwavering commitment to the anti-corruption mission and calling on the next generation to carry on the fight.
Speaking at the Running Gala this morning, ICAC Commissioner Woo Ying-ming remarked that the ICAC’s golden jubilee celebration was themed “Fighting Corruption: The Mission Continues”, in order to remind ICAC officers and the public that Hong Kong had come a long way in becoming a corruption-free society and the city would never stop its battle against corruption.
Woo added that the ICAC would strive to safeguard and promote the probity culture of Hong Kong. With the soon-to-open Hong Kong International Academy Against Corruption, the ICAC would bring anti-corruption work to the next level and towards another milestone.
“I can assure that with the concerted efforts of ICAC officers and Hong Kong citizens, we will make the city an even better place,” Woo reiterated.
Officiating at today’s event, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki commended the ICAC for its three-pronged approach combining law enforcement, prevention and education in tackling corruption since the 1970s, and successfully enlisted the general public’s support, turning Hong Kong into one of the cleanest places in the world.
“With proven track record over the past five decades, I firmly believe the ICAC will go from strength to strength and contribute to the steadfast implementation of ‘one country, two systems’, and will maintain a level playing field where citizens can enjoy peace and sustainable economic development,” Chan said.
Before kicking off the Running Gala, officiating guests passed on various props depicting the core values upheld by ICAC officers to young people and children, symbolizing the handing over of the anti-graft baton to the next generation.
Joining ICAC Commissioner and Chief Secretary for Administration to ring the starting signal for the Running Gala were famous action star Donnie Yen; Commissioner of Police Siu Chak-yee; ICAC Deputy Commissioner cum Head of Operations Ricky Yau Shu-chun; Chairman of the Operations Review Committee Bernard Charnwut Chan; Chairman of the Corruption Prevention Advisory Committee Dr Kelvin Wong Tin-yau; Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Community Relations Professor Simon Ho Shun-man; Deputy Director of Administration Nicholas Chan Chun-tak and other ICAC directorates.
The ICAC 50th Anniversary Running Gala took place at West Kowloon Cultural District Harbourside Lawn East. It was one of the flagship events among a series of community engagement programmes themed “Fighting Corruption: The Mission Continues”. The Running Gala comprised a 5-kilometre challenge run and a 1-kilometre family run, attracting about 1,000 participants from different sectors and age groups. The event also featured various interactive parent-child activities and games, meeting with ICAC’s cartoon character “Little Coffee Bean”, as well as photo-taking corners.
The ICAC was established on February 15, 1974. To mark its 50th anniversary, three events combining running and anti-corruption education were held to encourage citizens to show their support to the Commission. In addition to today’s Running Gala, a Kick-off Run and a Virtual Walk were held earlier.
A total of over 2,000 citizens registered for the Virtual Walk which was concluded last month. Participants accumulated walking or running distances totalling about 90,000 kilometres, exceeding the distance of going round the Earth twice.
