Ex-deputy manager charged with accepting $75,000 bribes over exchange of mahjong tiles

A former deputy manager of a mahjong school has been charged by the ICAC today (Tuesday) with accepting a total of around $75,000 as bribes for exchanging and/or assisting in the exchange of mahjong tiles.

Chan Chun-on, formerly known as Chan Wai-leung, 65, former deputy manager of mahjong school百樂麻雀娛樂公司 (Pak Lok), faces one count of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

The defendant will appear at the Kowloon City Magistracy for plea this Thursday (October 13).

At the material time, Pak Lok operated a mahjong school in Fuk Wa Street, Kowloon. As the deputy manager of the mahjong school, the defendant was responsible for running its daily operation and maintaining its order.

The charge alleges that between an unknown date in July 2015 and October 6, 2015, the defendant, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, accepted a total of around $75,000 from his then supervisor as rewards for exchanging and/or assisting in the exchange of the mahjong tiles of Pak Lok.

Pak Lok has rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.

The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance on Thursday.
