ICAC chief calls for all-out efforts to uphold integrity for a graft-free Hong Kong

2016-12-9

ICAC Commissioner Mr Simon Peh Yun-lu called on members of the public to join hands with the Commission to promote the messages of probity and integrity in the community, and safeguard a corruption-free society by holding fast to these core values in their daily lives.

Officiating at the ICAC’s “All for Integrity” Gala Event, produced by the Commercial Radio FM 903 Channel, at Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre yesterday (December 8) evening, Mr Peh said throughout the past 40-odd years, with the joint efforts of the community, the ICAC remained committed to its mission of fighting corruption through a three-pronged strategy combining law enforcement, prevention and education.

“Today, Hong Kong is internationally acclaimed as a corruption-free city. This hard-earned achievement is of utmost importance to the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong,” Mr Peh said.

Mr Peh noted that the territory-wide, multi-year “All for Integrity” education and publicity programme, organised by the ICAC’s Community Relations Department, was supported by over 80 organisations since its launch, including the 18 District Councils, government departments, chambers of commerce, district organisations and voluntary agencies. These organisations had organised or co-hosted with the ICAC a series of activities to disseminate anti-corruption messages.

The Commissioner called on members of the public to continue to participate in other activities under the “All for Integrity” programme so as to help spread the message of probity in their respective social groups.

“It is important to always uphold the core values of probity and integrity, no matter it is in one’s workplace or in his daily life. One must not be blinded by momentary gains and lose sight of his personal values,” said Mr Peh.

The Gala Event, which was the highlight of this year’s “All for Integrity” programme, attracted about 1,000 participants across the territory.

Chairpersons or representatives of the 18 District Councils were invited to officiate at the Gala Event, demonstrating the local communities’ determination and support. They also shared with participants the importance of integrity to the overall development of Hong Kong and local communities.

Pop singer Joyce Cheng Yan-yee made her debut performance of “A Kind of Persistence”, the theme song written for the “All for Integrity” programme, to urge youngsters to hold fast to the positive value of integrity. A music video of the theme song, featuring community involvement projects held earlier in the 18 local communities, was also launched at last night’s event to signify the public’s support for the “All for Integrity” programme.

It was followed by music shows from pop singers Tang Siu-hau, Ryan Lau Wai-wong and Super Girls. Representatives from ethnic minorities and a sports association also showed their talents in dance performance and rope skipping respectively. Interactive games were also conducted to engage the audience for promoting probity messages.

The “All for Integrity” programme hinges on three emphasis – public engagement, community support, and passing the torch. Through an array of activities, the programme aims to reach out to different strata of the community to foster their concept of integrity and consolidate their support for anti-corruption work, and to pass the torch to the next generation.

Under the programme, a launching ceremony, a slogan and icon design competition and a premiere of “ICAC Investigators 2016” TV drama series were held earlier this year, while the theme was also featured in ICAC’s booth at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2016 this summer. Feature interviews with Hong Kong athletes, namely “A Kind of Persistence”, were recently launched on the ICAC’s online platforms.

More highlighting events will take place next year. A Youth Chapter of the ICAC Club, the graft-buster’s voluntary group, will be set up in 2017 to engage more young people in promoting the anti-corruption cause. A conference will also be organised to promote business ethics in listed companies. More details are available on the ICAC’s dedicated online platform for the “All for Integrity” programme (www.facebook.com/allforintegrity).

In addition, to tie-in with the International Anti-Corruption Day and to share with the international community Hong Kong’s publicity and education work in fighting corruption, arrangement has been made with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to showcase a video featuring activities of the “All for Integrity” programme on the UNODC website in the near future.
