A former supervisor of a Japanese restaurant appeared in the Kowloon City Magistracy today (January 18) after being charged by the ICAC with accepting illegal rebates totalling over $15,000 from a food supplier for placing seafood orders with the latter.

Lai Ka-fat, 31, former supervisor of Daixija Japanese Buffet (Daixija) under Funny Castle Limited (Funny Castle), who was charged on Monday (January 16), faced one count of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. Principal Magistrate Peter Law Tak-chuen adjourned the case to February 15 this year for a pre-trial review.

At the material time, the defendant was employed by Funny Castle as supervisor of the sashimi section of Daixija, a Japanese restaurant in Jordan, Kowloon.

Among other duties, the defendant was responsible for placing orders with food suppliers, including Ocean Star Food Trading Company (Ocean Star).

The charge alleged that between June 1 and October 31, 2015, the defendant, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, accepted a total of $15,813 from the sole proprietor of Ocean Star as rewards for ordering seafood from Ocean Star.

The defendant was granted cash bail of $5,000. He was ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.

Funny Castle had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.

The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Ming Lee.
