The National Commission of Supervision (NCS) and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) co-hosted the anti-corruption workshop on “Promoting Integrity for Economic Prosperity” for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Hong Kong, China. Commencing today (June 9), the two-day workshop drew participation of over 150 representatives from various member economies and international organisations and institutions to foster exchange and discussion on promoting integrity for economic prosperity and pave way for establishing network of practical cooperation.

A team leader of a bar-bending subcontractor of a transitional housing project in Yuen Long was charged by the ICAC today (June 8) for allegedly accepting bribes totalling over $50,000 from a bar-bender in a span of five months for continuing the latter’s employment.

A renovation works contractor, charged by the ICAC, was today (June 4) convicted at the District Court of offering bribes totalling $1.3 million to a then employee of a property investment company for showing favour in relation to property renovation works.

A then deputy general manager of a listed company and his parents were earlier charged by the ICAC with bribery for showing favour to an Australian businessman regarding the listed company’s investments in overseas property development projects, involving bribes amounting to about AUD$25 million. The Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today (June 3) approved the prosecution’s application to amend the indictment, laying an additional bribery charge against the then deputy general manager and his mother while the case is pending committal to the High Court.

The ICAC earlier charged a then deputy general manager of a listed company and his mother with bribery for showing favour to an Australian businessman regarding the listed company’s investments in overseas property development projects. Following further investigation by the Commission and legal advice from the Department of Justice, the father of the then deputy general manager was charged for his role in the corruption scheme involving bribes amounting to about AUD$25 million.

Two football players and a betting agent were today (May 29) sentenced to jail terms up to 17 months at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts following the ICAC’s Operation “Green Grass” which neutralised a corruption syndicate linked to football match-fixing and illegal gambling. The syndicate bribed football players to rig match results for three clubs participating in the Hong Kong Premier League (HK Premier League) and the First Division of Hong Kong (HK First Division) across two seasons between 2021 and 2023, enabling its members to profit from illegal gambling.

Four defendants charged by the ICAC, including an inmate of Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre (LCKRC), were sentenced today (May 29) to jail terms ranging from one year to over three years at the District Court for conspiring together to plot two crimes to facilitate sentence reduction applications for two other inmates by tipping off the Police about the planned crimes. Detection and early intervention by the ICAC successfully intercepted these planned crimes involving possession of unlawful arms, explosives or drugs.

A then Chair Professor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), charged by the ICAC, was today (May 28) sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts for accepting a bribe of $40,000 from a friend and offering red packets to two colleagues to assist an unqualified student with admission to a master’s programme administered by him.

A Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), charged by the ICAC, was today (May 26) sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment at the District Court for accepting bribes totalling over $1.14 million from a merchant and committing misconduct in public office (MIPO) by favouring the merchant in several criminal investigations and divulging Police investigation information to him.

An ICAC corruption investigation revealed that a then general manager of a pharmaceutical wholesaler made false representations regarding consultancy services provided by a secretarial services company operated by his subordinate to defraud the pharmaceutical wholesaler of service fees totalling about $1.1 million, while a business partner of the subordinate had assisted in money-laundering. The trio were today (May 26) sentenced at the District Court to jail terms ranging from 10 to 26 months.
