Everyone loves a good story. And Hong Kong has a good story to tell when it comes to fighting corruption. Recently Hong Kong’s success story in curbing corruption within a short timespan travelled the miles and resonated with anti-graft experts and scholars in the European continent.
During a 10-day duty visit to Europe last month, ICAC Commissioner Mr Simon Peh Yun-lu attended the High-Level Conference of the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) of the Council of Europe on “Strengthening transparency and accountability to ensure integrity: United against corruption” in Croatia. Mr Peh, the only Asian speaker at the notable event, recounted Hong Kong’s anti-graft history and experience.
Addressing about 250 senior policymakers and experts from around the world, Mr Peh also stressed the importance of enhancing connectivity, the sharing of best practices and innovative strategies as well as capacity building to foster international co-operation in sustaining the battle against corruption.
Apart from Croatia, Mr Peh also travelled to Switzerland where he visited the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) and the World Economic Forum before heading for Austria to pay a visit to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. On the last leg of his journey in Denmark, Mr Peh met with senior executives of the Transparency International (TI) while attending a global forum on governance organised by the anti-graft watchdog. Mr Peh took the opportunity to update these international organisations on Hong Kong’s latest probity situation.
