Forging closer partnerships in graft fight
in the time of pandemic

Travel restrictions and quarantine measures under the COVID-19 pandemic have posed challenges to anti-corruption agencies around the world in sustaining close collaborations in fighting corruption. During this testing time, the ICAC has continued to share experience, exchange ideas and explore cooperation on capacity building with our counterparts on online platforms.

Back in November 2020, ICAC Commissioner Simon Peh Yun-lu conducted an online meeting with the Chairman of Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Lt General Alik Shpekabayev. Apart from introducing the work and anti-corruption strategies of the ICAC as well as capacity building programmes for overseas anti-corruption agencies, Commissioner Peh also shared the Commission’s experience in the implementation of corruption prevention recommendations in the government sector and initiatives to raise awareness, especially among the young generations.

In February 2021, Commissioner Peh held an online meeting with the Commissioner of Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) of Macao Chan Tsz-king to exchange views on the anti-corruption work of Hong Kong and Macao. In addition to introducing to each other the anti-graft initiatives of the two agencies, Commissioner Peh and Commissioner Chan also explored advancing collaboration in prevention and education under the framework of the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Participants of the online meeting with CACC also included Deputy Commissioner and Head of Operations Ricky Yau Shu-chun, Director of Community Relations Ho Wai-chi, Director of Corruption Prevention Joe Lee Yat-sau, and Secretary to the Commission Against Corruption Sally Kwan Yee-lan.

Moreover, just this month Commissioner Peh attended a virtual meeting with Madam Justice Eva Wanasundera, Chairperson of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) of Sri Lanka, during the opening session of the capacity building programme offered by the ICAC for CIABOC. Commissioner Peh welcomed officers of CIABOC for participating in the online training programme and also discussed with Chairperson Wanasundera on future collaboration between the two organisations.
