Manager charged with accepting $300,000 illegal rebates

A manager of a department store has been charged by the ICAC with accepting up to $300,000 in illegal rebates from a supplier in relation to the placing of purchase orders on digital video cameras.
Paul Chan Tsz-wai, 44, manager of Marcello (Tax Free) International Department Store Corporation Limited (Marcello), who was charged yesterday (Wednesday), faces one count of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
The defendant, currently on ICAC bail, will appear at the Kowloon City Magistracy tomorrow (Friday) morning for plea.
At the material time, the defendant was the manager of Marcello – an electronic and household products department store. Amongst the digital video cameras suppliers was Yurendis Japan Corporation Limited (Yurendis).
The charge alleges that between July 1, 2011 and August 31, 2013, the defendant accepted about $250,000 to $300,000 in illegal rebates from the operator of Yurendis as rewards for placing purchase orders with Yurendis.
Marcello had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.
