IAACA convenes 4th ExCo meeting in HK to enhance global anti-graft collaboration

2023-4-26

About 40 representatives of overseas anti-corruption agencies (ACAs) met in Hong Kong today (April 26) for the 4th Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) to discuss future plans and initiatives for international anti-corruption cooperation.

ICAC Special Adviser cum President of IAACA Mr Simon Peh Yun-lu noted that while the pandemic in the past few years had brought unprecedented challenges to IAACA and the international fight against corruption, the IAACA had maintained close liaisons with ACAs and conducted a number of meetings and training programmes online. Various anti-graft initiatives and exchanges fostered by IAACA, including the regional coordination mechanism introduced by the ExCo members, had achieved positive results. Since Mr Peh assumed presidency in January 2022, the number of IAACA members have increased by 36 to 159.

Members attending the IAACA 4th ExCo meeting included representatives of ACAs from Azerbaijan, South Africa, Brunei, Greece, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, Romania, Senegal and Singapore, as well as managerial staff from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Today also saw the opening of the Hong Kong Office of IAACA Secretariat. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Peh thanked the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for its continuous support to IAACA and the Secretariat. He also remarked that the establishment of IAACA Secretariat Office would benefit the long-term development of the Association.

“This new office will facilitate the Secretariat to carry out its anti-graft duties, allow it to manage the Association’s daily affairs, organise meetings and training events for IAACA members and our partners worldwide. The office is also a testament to our commitment to the long-term development of the Association,” said Mr Peh.

To strengthen liaison and collaboration among ACAs, the IAACA Secretariat also took the opportunity to arrange bilateral meetings and exchange activities for the delegations during their stay in Hong Kong.

The IAACA was founded in 2006 as an independent, non-political institution aiming to promote the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption and assist ACAs to prevent and fight against corruption. In January 2022, then ICAC Commissioner Mr Simon Peh Yun-lu was elected President of the IAACA and Hong Kong ICAC took over the IAACA Secretariat, of which the office is now located at 18/F, 625 King’s Road, North Point.

IAACA has maintained close liaison with ACAs and promoted various anti-graft initiatives and exchanges during the pandemic, says ICAC Special Adviser cum President of IAACA Mr Simon Peh Yun-lu.
