Former merchandiser faces court for pocketing $380,000

A former merchandiser of a department store mainly dealing in Chinese-style clothes, charged by the ICAC for pocketing about $380,000 by purchasing goods from a firm operated by her at inflated prices, appeared in Western Court this (Wednesday) morning.
No plea was taken. Magistrate Mr Anthony Browne adjourned the case until February 9, 2000, pending transfer to District Court.
Gemma Choi Wai-han, 49, former merchandising director of Tangs Department Stores Limited (Tangs), faced one count of conspiracy to defraud TDSL.
Tangs operates a number of shops under the name “Shanghai Tang” on various locations in Hong Kong.
Choi was accused of conspiring with Mariana Cheung Shuk-han, shipping supervisor of Tangs, to defraud Tangs by dishonestly:
causing Tangs to purchase goods from Mass Oriental Industrial Company (Mass Oriental), a firm over which Choi had control, rather than from suppliers or manufacturers of the goods directly; and
causing Tangs to purchase those goods from Mass Oriental at inflated prices.
The alleged offence took place between July 1, 1997 and October 31, 1998.
Choi was granted cash bail of $200,000. She was ordered to surrender all travel documents, not to leave Hong Kong and not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Edward Wan.
