A Senior Inspector of Police and a Detective Police Constable were arrested by the ICAC yesterday (Monday) for allegedly soliciting $200,000 in bribes for offering assistance to a businessman who claimed to be the victim in a $8 million deception case.

The constable, aged 40, attached to Tuen Mun Police Station, was caught red-handed yesterday after he allegedly took $40,000 from the businessman at a restaurant in Tai Po.

The businessman had reported to the police that he had been defrauded of $8 million in 1998 in connection with land transactions in Tai Po. The alleged deception case is now under police investigation.

It was alleged that the Police had previously refused to take up the case and the businessman sought help from the constable.

The constable had allegedly discussed the case with the Senior Inspector, aged 43, attached to Tai Po Police Station.

The Senior Inspector was believed to have solicited $200,000 in bribes from the businessman in return for offering assistance and repeatedly pressed for the money through the constable.

It was alleged that the constable subsequently asked the businessman to pay $40,000 which he claimed to be the miscellaneous expenses incurred in offering assistance in the deception case.

After the alleged corrupt transaction took place, the constable was arrested by ICAC officers.

The two arrestees are being detained by the ICAC, pending further enquiries.
