Woman wanted by ICAC for $1.5m drug case

2000-2-18

The ICAC is looking for a Chinese woman who failed to turn up for a High Court trial in connection with an alleged drug trafficking case.

The wanted person, Chan Yuen-ting, aged 29, is about 5 feet 4 inches tall. She was among 24 persons arrested last April in an ICAC investigation into an alleged police corruption case.

It was alleged that some police officers in Yuen Long and Tuen Mun Districts were suspected to have tipped off the syndicate about police raids and supplied internal information on the operation of police units. They were also alleged to have arranged “ scapegoats ” to admit drug offences.

While the investigation into the corruption allegations is continuing, Chan and eight civilians have been charged with dangerous drugs offences. Chan alone faces five counts of conspiracy to traffic in heroin.

Chan was earlier granted court bail of $500,000 in cash, $200,000 in sureties and a property bond. She should appear at the Court of First Instance yesterday (Thursday) for hearing.

After she failed to turn up in court, Judge McMahon yesterday issued a warrant for her arrest.

Anyone who has information on Chan's whereabouts or any other information which may lead to her arrest is urged to contact the ICAC on its 24-hour hotline 2526 6366. Information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.
