A divorced woman who had allegedly offered a District Court judge cognac, cigarettes and $10,000 cash to thank the judge for granting her the custody of her three children, appeared at Eastern Court today (Thursday).

Kwok Lai-ying, 48, housewife, pleaded not guilty to one count of offering an advantage to District Court Deputy Judge Stephen John Geiser on December 2, 1999.

Magistrate Mr Ian Candy adjourned the case to April 6, 2000 for mention. The defendant was granted bail of $2,000 in own recognizance and was ordered not to leave Hong Kong.

It was alleged that Kwok had offered $10,000 cash, six cartons of cigarettes and three bottles of cognac to Deputy Judge Geiser as a reward for granting her the custody of her three children in a judiciary proceeding.

The judge did not accept the cash and the gifts, and referred the matter to the ICAC.

The prosecution was today represented by Senior Government Counsel Maggie Yang, assisted by ICAC officer Fung Chi-ming.
