Malaysian tour operator charged with bribing HK senior travel executive

A tour operator in Malaysia was charged and brought to Eastern Court this (Wednesday) afternoon for allegedly offering about HK$70,000 in illegal kickbacks to an employee of local travel agency Morning Star Travel Services Ltd. (Morning Star).
No plea was taken. Magistrate Mr Ian Candy adjourned the case to June 7, 2000 for mention.
Chan Seng-chye, 52, a Malaysian and managing director of Eramaz Travel Services SDN.BHD. (Eramaz) in Kuala Lumpur, was charged by the ICAC with three counts of offering HK$69,140 in total to Kong Pak-cheung, Peter, general manager of Morning Star, between June 1999 and February this year.
The bribes were for Kong to show general favours to Eramaz.
Eramaz has been contracted by Morning Star to organise inbound tours in Malaysia for the latter ’ s clients.
It was alleged that in late 1998, Chan agreed to offer Kong an illegal commission of HK$20 for every tourist in the tour groups allocated by Morning Star to Eramaz, and HK$10 for every tourist joining optional activities offered by Eramaz.
Between June 1999 and February this year, Chan had allegedly offered HK$69,140 in total to Kong on three occasions. The corrupt transactions allegedly took place in Hong Kong when Chan visited the territory.
Chan was arrested by ICAC officers on Monday (May 22) at the Chep Lap Kok Airport upon his arrival from Malaysia.
Chan was today granted bail of $10,000 in cash and $10,000 in surety, and was ordered not to leave Hong Kong.
ICAC officer Ken Ho appeared for the prosecution today.
Morning Star offered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation. Inquiries into this case are still continuing.
