ICAC Statement

2000-6-1

The following is a statement made by Acting Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Mr Tony Kwok Man-wai upon the news of the death of former Hong Kong Governor Lord MacLehose :

"I and all staff members of the ICAC want to convey our condolences to the family of Lord MacLehose who shall be remembered by many in the community for his decisive action in setting up an independent agency to spearhead the battle against corruption in Hong Kong.

We wish to pay the highest tribute to Lord MacLehose for his commitment to Hong Kong's anti-corruption work during this tenure as the Governor between 1971 and 1982.

Hong Kong has gained a reputation as one of the least corrupt places in Asia today. It indeed owes much to Lord MacLehose who turned the momentum against corruption and set off a 'quiet revolution' in our society. ”
