2000-6-13
A former chairman of a rural committee on Lantao Island was today (Tuesday) charged by the ICAC for allegedly embezzling $178,300 in committee funds.
Cheung Tim-tak, 62, former chairman of the South Lantao Rural Committee (SLRC), will appear in Western Court at 9:30 am on Thursday (June 15) to face a total of 11 theft charges.
The case originated from a corruption complaint, which alleged that a rural committee chairman had bribed two vice-chairmen for allowing him to steal funds from the committee.
Cheung was the chairman of the 19th SLRC and an ex-officio member of the New Territories District Board between 1995 and 1999.
The 11 charges alleged that Cheung had stolen debts totalling $178,300 owed by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited to SLRC between September 1997 and December 1998.
The income of SLRC, one of the 27 rural committees under the Heung Yee Kuk, mainly comes from government subsidies and villagers' donations.
Cheung was granted ICAC bail, pending court appearance on Thursday.
