Senior Customs Officer charged for allegedly soliciting and accepting advantages to tip off anti-piracy raids

A Senior Customs Officer of the Customs and Excise Department (C&E) was charged by the ICAC today (Thursday) for allegedly soliciting a monthly payment of $100,000 and accepting free sexual services from an operator of a pirated video compact discs shop i n Yaumatei in return for giving prior warnings of raids.
Chan Ka-yiu, 39, attached to C&E's Special Task Force, will appear at 9:30 am in South Kowloon Court tomorrow (Friday) to face three counts of offences.
Two of the charges alleged that Chan had solicited a monthly payment of $100,000 on two occasions from Cheng Ming-kit as a reward for providing information to Cheng or his employees in respect of impending anti-piracy raids conducted by C&E.
He was also alleged to have accepted hostess and sexual services worth $1,500 for the same reason.
The alleged offences took place between September 4 and 13 last year.
The ICAC commenced an investigation after receiving a corruption report referred by C&E.
Subsequent enquiries led to Chan's arrest in November last year.
The ICAC has received full assistance from C&E during its investigation.
Chan was granted ICAC bail, pending court appearance tomorrow.
