Young people urged to prepare for future challenges

2000-6-22

More than 600 young people will attend a forum hosted by the Independent Commission Against Corruption and other community organisations in August to address issues they face in the new century.

Speaking at a press conference today (Thursday) to announce details of the Youth Summit 2000 , Organising Committee Chairman Moses Cheng Mo-chi said grooming young people to become leaders was as crucial as providing a level-playing field for investors in maintaining Hong Kong ' s position as a major financial centre in Asia.

He said youth organisations should be aware of the needs and concerns of young people in order to map out appropriate strategies.

“ The Summit will offer an opportunity for young people to express their views on issues concerning them, ” said Mr Cheng.

The Summit will gather together young people aged between 16 and 29 from Hong Kong, the Mainland and Macau to exchange views on issues such as the challenges brought by the Internet as well as influence from family education and mass media.

The summit, jointly organised by the ICAC, Commission on Youth, Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and Rotary International District 3450 (Hong Kong & Macau) and 12 youth organisations, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Ce ntre on August 19.

Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan will officiate at the Opening Ceremony while Executive Chairman of Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd Richard Li and Secretary-Designate for Education and Manpower Fanny Law will address the Summit.

Eight leading figures from different fields will share their personal experiences with the participants and encourage them to lead a meaningful and fruitful life. They are Mr Linus Cheung, Chief Executive of Cable and Wireless HKT; Mr Philip Chen, Direct or and Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Pacific Airways Limited; Professor Cheng Kai-ming, Vice-President of University of Hong Kong; Mr Fung Ying-ki, Winner of Hong Kong Sports Star Award 1999; Dr Ip Yan-ming, Former Chairman of the Outstanding Young Pe rsons ’ Association; Mr Lawrence Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of Commercial Radio; Ms Siao Fong-fong, Chairperson of End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation; and Mr Samson Tam, Chairman of Group Sense Limited.

ICAC ' s Community Relations Department Youth Programme Co-ordinator Vanessa So Cheung Lai-ying said in order to provide some food for thought at the Summit, a youth award project had been launched in April to recruit young people to research on six topics relat ed to issues they faced in the new century.

“ The response is encouraging with more than 90 teams having registered, ” said Mrs So. She said the winning team on each topic will present their reports and lead the discussions at the Summit. They will also be invited to visit the Mainland later this year.

Mrs So added that views expressed in the Summit could help the ICAC draw up appropriate youth education strategies in the future. The views will also be compiled in a report to be sent to schools and youth groups for their reference.

The Summit is expected to be attended by 500-plus participants from Hong Kong, 130 from Mainland universities and 10 from Macau.
