2000-6-28

A teacher and a laboratory technician of a secondary school were charged by the ICAC today (Wednesday) for allegedly disclosing to students what laboratory apparatus would be used in the Physics Practical Examination for this year's Hong Kong Advanced Lev el Examination (HKALE) before the examination took place.

Sham Chor-wai, 42, and Leung Kwok-yuen, 41, respectively a teacher and a laboratory technician of La Salle College, will appear at 9:30 am on Friday (June 30) in San Po Kong Court .

They were charged with three offences under the Hong Kong Examinations Authority Ordinance.

La Salle College was one of the examination centres of HKALE Physics Practical Examination, while Sham and Leung were appointed by Hong Kong Examinations Authority as the Centre Examiner and the Laboratory Technician respectively.

This year's A-level Physics Practical Examination took place between April 25 and 27.

Two of the charges allege that on April 17 and 18 this year, both Sham and Leung had communicated to some students of La Salle College the apparatus of the examination, which had come to their knowledge while performing their duties under the Ordinance.

Sham alone further faces a similar charge which alleges he communicated the same matter to some students of Hong Kong Student Association Limited on April 20 this year.

The case originated from a corruption complaint, alleging that a teacher might have bribed a laboratory technician to facilitate unauthorised access to examination apparatus. The bribery allegation was found to be unsubstantiated.

Sham and Leung were granted ICAC bail, pending court appearances on Friday.
