Registered Nurse charged with embezzling medical symposium funds
2000-8-3
A Registered Nurse who assisted in organising a regional medical symposium in Hong Kong was charged by the ICAC today (Thursday) for allegedly embezzling $168,000 symposium funds by forging the signature of an Associate Professor of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on a number of cheques.
Woo Carrie, 35, employed by the HKU, will appear at 9:30 am in Eastern Court tomorrow (Friday) to face three counts of theft and three counts of forgery.
The case originated from a corruption complaint, which alleged that the accounts of the Asia Pacific Cardiovascular Stenting Symposium (APCSS) might have been corruptly manipulated.
The two-day symposium, the first of its kind organised in Hong Kong, was held in July 1997.
The defendant was deployed to work as the Research Nurse of Dr David Sai-wah Ho, the organiser of the symposium, and was responsible for handling cheque payments in relation to the symposium.
Three of the charges allege that Woo has stolen $168,000 by way of cheques from the bank account of APCSS.
Woo is also accused of forging the signature of Dr Ho on three cheques belonging to the APCSS.
The alleged offences took place between August 22, 1997 and February 14, 1998.
The ICAC received full assistance from the HKU during its investigation.
Woo was released on ICAC bail, pending her court appearance tomorrow.
