Detective charged with misconduct over car theft probe

2000-8-5

A Detective Police Constable alleged to have instructed a witness to fabricate evidence in relation to a car theft case has been charged by the ICAC with misconduct in public office.

The Police had investigated a case involving five suspects who allegedly stole 13 cars belonging to the witness.

Yeung Yiu-nin, 43, attached to the Tin Shui Wai Police Station, was said to have attempted to curtail the police investigation.

He will appear at 9:30 am in Tuen Mun Court next Monday (August 7) to face two counts of misconduct in public office, contrary to the Common Law.

The two charges alleged that Yeung had dishonestly instructed, directed or counselled Chan Ka-fai to make a false witness statement and false sale authorisations in the course of a police investigation into the alleged theft of vehicles on May 5 and 22 la st year.

Yeung's acts were said to have been calculated to injure the public interest.

The case originated from a corruption complaint, alleging that some police officers at the Tin Shui Wai Police Station might have accepted advantages from the suspects of a Police car theft case as a reward for fixing up the case.

He was released on ICAC bail, pending court appearance on Monday.
