2000-8-8

The ICAC yesterday (Monday) arrested a director of a local trading company for allegedly offering $806,000 in bribes to an overseas garment buyer over the past two years for awarding purchase orders worth $16 million.

The buyer, an Australian woman, was also arrested for suspected corruption.

The ICAC commenced investigations after receiving a corruption complaint.

Investigations revealed that in 1997, the buyer, while being employed by a retail group based in Australia, approached the company director and allegedly offered business to the latter provided that five percent of the purchase orders would be paid as “commission”.

It was alleged that between July 1997 and July 1999, the arrested company director had paid the buyer more than $806,790 in bribes and received purchase orders totalling $16 million from the Australian company involved.

The 34-year-old company director Chu Kai-yuen and the 46-year-old buyer Kristen Elaine Baunach will be charged respectively with 16 counts of offering advantages, and one holding charge of accepting bribes, under Section 9 of the Prevention of Bribery Ord inance. They will appear before Eastern Court tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at 9:30 am.

The two suspects are being detained by the ICAC, pending their court appearances tomorrow.
