2000-8-24
A former works supervisor of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) and a subcontractor, charged by the ICAC with bribery offences over work payments of a waterproof repairing project at the MTRC's Diamond Hill Station, appeared in San Po Kong Court today (Thursday).
The two defendants were Wong Hok-shing, 33, formerly employed by the MTRC, and Chan Ming-piu, 46, proprietor of Xiaoming Engineering Company (Xiaoming).
Xiaoming subcontracted from the main contractor a project to repair water leakage at the MTRC's Diamond Hill Station. Wong was tasked to supervise the work of Xiaoming.
Wong faced one holding charge soliciting $200,000 from Chan as a reward for expediting the process of certifying the work done at a waterproof repairing project at the Diamond Hill Station between late 1998 and mid 1999.
Chan was alleged to have offered $78,000 to Wong for him to expedite the payment of project fees to Xiaoming in December 1998.
No pleas were taken. Magistrate Mr Kwok Wai-kin adjourned the case until October 19 this year for mention.
Wong and Chan were granted cash bail of $5,000 each. They were ordered to surrender all travel documents, not to leave Hong Kong, not to interfere with prosecution witnesses, and to reside at the reported addresses.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Nelson Lau.
