In connection with the ICAC’s operation against suspected graft facilitated cross-border smuggling of portable phones in armoured vehicles, the Commission last night searched a warehouse in Shamshuipo and seized large quantities of counterfeit mobile phone accessories and 1,600 mobi le phones, worth about $3.5 million in total.

Three employees of a trading company, aged between 24 and 32, were arrested at the warehouse last night.

The mobile phones seized were packed in 80 carton boxes without proper packaging, while the original packaging were separately stored at the warehouse.

The counterfeit accessories included memory cards, cables, chargers and belt clips, totalling 1,000 items.

It was believed that these products would be smuggled to the Mainland by means of armoured vehicles with the corrupt assistance of security company staff.

The three arrestees and the goods seized will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for further investigations.

During the search last night, the ICAC also located an illegal immigrant working at the warehouse, who was subsequently handed over to the Immigration Department.

The two proprietors of the trading company, a driver and two security guards of a security company, arrested yesterday in ICAC’s operation “Cypress”, would be released on ICAC bail later tonight.

The ICAC’s inquiry into the corruption allegation is continuing.
