Ex-IRD Assistant Assessor charged with bribery offences

A former Assistant Assessor arrested in an ICAC operation which netted 32 persons was charged this evening by the ICAC for his alleged involvement in a tax bribery scam.
Li Hon-lun, 40, will appear at 9:30 am in Eastern Court tomorrow (Friday) to face three bribery offences.
The first charge alleged that Li had accepted more than $100,000 from Certified Public Accountant Peter Lau Yuk-chu as a reward for introducing Lau to a taxpayer under investigation by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), and giving favourable treatment t owards Lau and the taxpayer between 1997 and 1998.
He was also accused of having offered $10,000 to Tax Inspector II Angus Wong Wai-ki while having dealings with the IRD between June and August this year.
Li was further accused of offering an unspecified amount of money to another Tax Inspector II Chung Chi-ming on August 30 this year.
The bribe was said to be a reward for Chung to interfere with the IRD filing system in relation to the file of a specific taxpayer under IRD investigation, for the purpose of preventing the file from being brought up for further action by IRD.
Li is being detained by the ICAC, pending court appearance tomorrow.
