Customs Officer charged with selling pirated 'PlayStation' products

2000-10-24

A Customs and Excise (C&E) officer and two VCD shop operators were charged by the ICAC today (Tuesday) for allegedly selling counterfeit "PlayStation" products at a shop in Kwai Chung Plaza.

Chan Kam-keung, 33, Customs Officer; Choi Chi-cheong, 23, and Yip Chi-wai, 32, both operators of a VCD shop, will appear in Tsuen Wan Court at 9:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday) to face a total of five offences.

The case arose from a corruption complaint, alleging that a pirated VCD shop had been receiving tip-offs about C&E raids through bribing Customs officers.

ICAC enquiries revealed that a C&E officer was allegedly involved in the sale of counterfeit goods.

The trio were among seven arrested in an ICAC operation in March this year.

Three of the charges alleged that the trio sold two memory cards and two controllers, and possessed 133 memory cards and 80 controllers with a forged trade mark "PlayStation" at the shop.

They were also charged with one count of having in their possession 316 CD-ROMs and 86 programme memory cartridges, without the licence of the copyright owner.

The Customs Officer also faced one count of possessing 45 CD-ROMs, which were infringing copies of copyright works.

The alleged offences took place between October 26 last year and March 22 this year.

The defendants have been released on bail, pending court appearances tomorrow.
