ICAC Opens Up to the Consular Corps

2000-11-3

More than 50 members of the diplomatic community in Hong Kong, including more than 30 consul generals, visited the ICAC today (Friday) and took a first-hand look at the anti-corruption agency in action.

Noting that the programme was the first ever arranged by the Commission, ICAC Commissioner Mr Alan Lai Nin said he hoped the visit would help members of the consular corps get a better understanding of its work.

Addressing the visiting guests, Mr Lai said the programme would be especially useful for consuls who, unlike people born and bred in Hong Kong, did not have the benefit of witnessing the “quiet revolution” that had transformed Hong Kong into one of the least corrupt places in the world.

“In the 26 years since our inception, the ICAC has engineered a real change in Hong Kong’s corruption landscape,” Mr Lai noted.

As the “eyes and ears” of individual countries, Mr Lai said views and comments of the consular representatives on Hong Kong and the ICAC would be valued.

During the visit, the guests were briefed on the objectives and strategies of the ICAC’s three departments, namely the Operations Department, the Corruption Prevention Department and the Community Relations Department.

The visit also featured a tour of various facilities of the Operations Department, including the ICAC Exhibition Hall, Video Interview Rooms, Report Centre and Detention Centre.
