2000-11-3
A Senior Police Inspector (SIP) was arrested by the ICAC yesterday (Thursday) on suspicion of corruptly protecting an illegal "Taiwan mahjong" gambling den inside a residential flat.
The SIP, aged 40, was caught red-handed at the gambling den inside a flat in Happy Valley when four gamblers were playing mahjong game at a stake of $6,000. Chips valued at $360,000 were seized.
Also arrested were five women - one alleged gambling den operator and four gamblers.
The investigation originated from a corruption complaint alleging that an SIP, attached to the Waterfront Police Station, had accepted advantages to protect a mahjong den.
ICAC enquiries revealed that the arrested SIP rented the flat and frequented the den.
The illegal gambling den had been in operation since 1998. A commission of $3,000 to $4,000 was charged for each mahjong table.
All the arrested persons have been released on bail.
ICAC investigation is continuing.
