Nightclub staff arrested for allegedly bribing caretakers to facilitate hostesses' access

A supervisor and a manager of a nightclub in Wan Chai were arrested by the ICAC on Thursday (November 9) for allegedly offering over $30,000 in “tea money” to caretakers of a building to facilitate its hostesses to use entrance of the building.

The nightclub has a side door linked to the ground floor of the residential building, but the door should always be kept closed for security reasons.

It was believed that club hostesses preferred to use the building's entrance instead of the main entrance of the nightclub for convenience.

The investigation originated from a corruption complaint, alleging that staff of a nightclub might have bribed a supervisor of the building's management office over the use of the building's entrance by hostesses.

ICAC enquiries revealed since 1997, the arrested supervisor and manager had allegedly offered “tea money” of about $1,200 to $1,400 a month to the caretakers of the building.

The “tea money” was said to reward the caretakers for allowing hostesses to gain access to the nightclub through the building's entrance.

The caretakers allegedly shared the “tea money” among themselves.

Seven serving and former caretakers were also interviewed.

The two arrestees have been released on ICAC bail. Enquiries are continuing.
