Couple wanted by ICAC for alleged drug trafficking

2000-11-20

The court today (Monday) issued a warrant for the arrest of a merchant in connection with alleged drug trafficking after he failed to turn up in court this morning.

His wife who has also absconded is wanted by the ICAC for drug offences.

Yau Heung-tong, 32, merchant, and his wife Chan Yuen-ting, 30, were among 24 persons arrested last year in an ICAC investigation into an alleged police corruption case.

The investigation stemmed from allegations against some police officers, who were suspected to have tipped off a drug syndicate about police raids and arranged “scapegoats” for drug offences.

In the course of the investigation, Yau, Chan and nine other civilians were found to have allegedly committed drug related offences.

Yau was earlier charged and pleaded guilty to one count of possession of dangerous drugs. He was fined $5,000.

In March this year, Yau faced two additional counts of conspiracy to traffic in heroin between February 1 and December 31, 1992.

He was granted court bail of $100,000 in cash and $100,000 in surety, and was due to appear in Eastern Court today for preliminary inquiry for committal to the Court of First Instance.

Magistrate Mr Henry Mierczak issued a warrant for Yau's arrest this morning and ordered the forfeiture of his cash bail and surety.

His wife Chan Yuen-ting was ordered to appear in the Court of First Instance on February 17 this year on five counts of conspiracy to trafficking in heroin.

Mr Justice MaMahon had issued a warrant for her arrest after she failed to turn up in court on that date.

In October this year, the Court of First Instance also ordered to forfeit her $500,000 bail money, a property bond in Yuen Long worth about $3 million and $200,000 surety.

Anyone who has information on the couple's whereabouts or any other information which may lead to their arrest is urged to contact the ICAC on its 24-hour hotline 2526 6366. Information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.
