The ICAC is investigating an alleged corruption scam in connection with illicit pig slaughtering at the Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse (SSSH) and an unlicensed slaughterhouse in Shek Kong.

In a joint operation with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD), the ICAC today (Thursday) arrested eight persons and uncovered illicit pig slaughtering activities at the Shek Kong premises.

The ICAC investigation originated from corruption complaints, alleging that some pig traders might have bribed FEHD officers and members of the operator of SSSH in return for not taking action against illicit pig slaughtering at the SSSH and giving advanc e warning of impending raids against the illegal slaughtering.

Arrested in the operation codenamed “ Operation Linnet ” were two staff members of the operator of the SSSH, three pig traders, a meat trader, a meat retailer, and a two-way permit holder.

Full co-operation has been provided by FEHD. A number of FEHD staff had assisted during the operation.

Four of the eight arrestees are being detained by the ICAC.

Enquiries are continuing.
