Former site supervisor convicted of taking bribes

A former site supervisor of an engineering company, charged by the ICAC for soliciting and accepting bribes totaling $200,000 for awarding sub-contracts relating to two construction projects, was convicted at the Eastern Court today (Tuesday).

Lai Kon-kin, 38, former site supervisor of VSC Engineering Products Co. Ltd., was arrested by the ICAC last May at a Sham Shui Po restaurant after receiving a bribe payment of $48,000 from the subcontractor.

Lai was found guilty on two counts of soliciting and four counts of accepting a total of $200,000 from the sub-contractor between February and April last year.

Magistrate Mr William Ng Shing-wai adjourned sentencing on Lai until April 18 this year, pending background and medical reports. He was remanded in the custody of the Correctional Services Department.

The engineering company concerned was a contractor for steel fixing works for the Hong Kong University (HKU)'s New Medical Complex Project in Pok Fu Lam and a government laboratory project in Sham Shui Po.

The court was told that Lai offered to help the sub-contractor obtain cut-and-blend work contracts for the two projects in return for two-thirds of the profits generated.

The prosecution was today represented by Sammy Hui on a fiat, assisted by ICAC officer Pan Pan.
