10 months' jail for last defendant in coffin theft case

2001-4-24

The last defendant sentenced in connection with the Cape Collinson Crematorium theft case was today (Tuesday) given a 10-month jail term by Judge Derek Pang at District Court.

Siu Yat-heung, 51, an Artisan of the then Urban Services Department (USD), was earlier found guilty on six counts of stealing burial property from coffins at the Crematorium between November 1991 and October 1999.

Such stolen property included a pair of shoes, a pair of spectacles, a metal clasp, a coffin handle, a Chinese musical instrument and a tracksuit.

The ICAC commenced an investigation following a referral from the management of the then USD in 1999, which suspected that corruption might be involved in alleged coffin thefts.

Former USD Artisan Lam Pak-shing was last year jailed for 30 months for stealing from coffins and bribing his supervisor to facilitate the theft activities.

Earlier this month, two serving Artisans Wong Chi-sum and Lee Kim-wah were respectively jailed for 18 months and nine months, while former Artisan Lam Chi-keung got a nine-month prison term in connection with this case.

The prosecution was today represented by Senior Government Counsel Johnny Chan, assisted by ICAC officer Eric Ma and Judy Cheung.
