The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is joining forces with 18 District Councils and community groups to launch a series of parenting programmes to foster a clean culture in the younger generation.

ICAC Commissioner, Alan Lai Nin, said: “Moral education should start at an early age. We hope parents could teach their children values like fairness, honesty, responsibility and discipline in their daily life.”

Mr Lai was speaking today (Saturday) at a ceremony to kick off the 10-month Family-based Package Project with Mr Moses Cheng, chairman of the project organising committee and 18 District Councils chairmen and members.

Capitalising on the partnership built up in recent years, the ICAC will again join hands with the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education and the Commission on Youth as well as the Committee on Home-School Co-operation to organise a series of activi ties this year to encourage parents to teach children positive values.

The project will include 30 parenting workshops and 10 district events to be held throughout the territory, some of which will be organised by the eight Regional Offices of the ICAC together with the 18 District Councils.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Lai shared with more than 400 parents his tip on parenting: “The greatest gift for children is to teach them to be an honest and happy person.”

Mr Moses Cheng and 18 District Councils chairmen/members also delivered parenting messages at the function.

An interactive e-game package designed by the ICAC and Lions Club International District 303, HK and Macau Zone X 2000/01 for children aged between six and nine was also launched today.

The games are uploaded onto the websites of the ICAC

( http://www.icac.org.hk/icac/egame ), the Lions Club

( http://www.lionclubs.org.hk/hframk_aorg.html ) and the Parent Community Platform ( http://www.parents.org.hk/game/index.html ).

As part of the project, the ICAC will in October produce a parenting guidebook packed with advice from parenting experts, academics and child development psychologists on how to teach children positive values.

The opening ceremony today was followed by a workshop featuring a keynote speech by Professor Wong Chung-kwong, Chairman of the Positive Living United Services.

Mr Wong was joined by radio parenting programme host, John Sham; President of the Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations of the Central and Western District, Mrs Annie Fung; and Publication Manager of Breakthrough, Ms Shirley Loo, in a panel discussion on family education and child development.
