2001-7-4
A Police Constable, charged by the ICAC with allegedly perverting the course of public justice by requesting his colleague to release a suspect arrested for illegal sale of contraband cigarettes, appeared in Shatin Court today (Wednesday).
Fung Fuk-wing, 40, attached to the Tin Sum Police Station, pleaded not guilty to one count of doing acts tending to pervert the course of public justice.
Magistrate Ms Amanda Woodcock adjourned the case until August 20 for trial.
The charge alleged that on November 18, 1998, Fung had done a series of acts which had a tendency to pervert the course of public justice.
Fung had allegedly requested his colleague, Police Constable Wai Kai-wing, to release Tsoi Wai-kwan who was suspected to have committed an offence under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, and to treat the seized cigarettes as lost property.
The defendant was granted bail of $10,000 in cash, and ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Chris Lai.
