Former orchestra director arrested for alleged $6.2m embezzlement

2001-7-23

A former director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta (HKS) was arrested by the ICAC last Thursday (July 19) for allegedly misappropriating funds totalling $6.2 million by falsifying the orchestra's accounting records.

The HKS, established in 1990, receives grants from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC).

The ICAC investigation arose from a corruption complaint made against the former director of HKS. It was alleged that he had falsely represented to the HKADC that his wife was employed by HKS as an administrator between 1997 and 1999, and received an inc ome of over half a million dollars.

Inquiries also revealed that between July 1993 and April 1999, a number of HKS cheques, totalling $6.2 million, were drawn in favour of the former director, his wife and daughter, and the monies were deposited into their personal bank accounts.

The senior management of HKADC has provided full assistance to ICAC throughout the investigation.

The arrestee has been released on ICAC bail. Enquiries are continuing.
