Three restaurant shareholders face court for allegedly offering advantages to Police Sergeant

Three shareholders of two associated restaurants, arrested in an ICAC operation last month for allegedly offering monthly bribe payments to a Police Sergeant, were charged and today (Friday) appeared in two separate courts.

Lam Kwun-man, 29, Yuen Lam, 37 and Wong Kwok-hing, 38, of Ichimoto Japanese Restaurant (Ichimoto), appeared respectively at Tsuen Wan Court and Kowloon City Court today (Friday) on a total of 12 charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery O rdinance.

At Tsuen Wan Court, Lam pleaded not guilty to eight counts of offering $16,000 in total to Police Sergeant Ku Ying-lai, as a reward for Ku to ensure that Ichimoto in Tsuen Wan would be free from problems caused by local triad members.

The alleged offences took place between December 1, 1997 and July 31, 1998.

Magistrate Ms Julia Livesey adjourned the case to September 3, 2001 for trial.

In the second case, Yuen and Wong was jointly charged with one count of conspiring to offer advantages to Ku between August 2, 1996 and March 31, 2000, for Ku to ensure that Ichimoto in Hunghom would be free from problems caused by local triad members.

Wong was further charged with three counts of offering $8,000 in total to Ku on three occasions between May 31 and July 30 last year for the same reason.

No pleas were taken from Yuen and Wong. Kowloon City Magistrate Mr Ernest Lin adjourned the case to August 17, 2001, pending transfer to the District Court.

Lam was granted bail of $2,000 in cash, while Yuen and Wong were each allowed cash bail of $25,000. All the defendants were ordered not to leave Hong Kong and not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.
