Retired policeman given suspended sentence for impersonation swindle

2001-10-4

A retired Senior Police Constable who posed as a serving policeman to cheat a gambling den operator out of $8,500 was given a suspended jail sentence at Kowloon City Court today (Thursday).

Chu Chin-hung, 47, now unemployed, earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of obtaining property by deception.

Magistrate Mr Ernest Lin today sentenced Chu to six months' imprisonment, suspended for three years.

The court heard that in late December last year, Chu went to a flat in Cooke Street, Hung Hom, where he found illegal mahjong activities operated by Chung Chin.

The defendant introduced himself as a police sergeant and showed Chung a membership card of the Police Recreation Club.

Chu also asked Chung to identify a man from a photograph.

Chu, while pretending to be a police officer, then took Chung to a nearby restaurant and solicited money from Chung for not taking action against his illegal mahjong activities. Chung then paid Chu $4,000.

On January 1 this year, Chu telephoned Chung. When they met at a park in Hung Hom, Chu showed Chung a group photograph of some uniformed police officers carrying arms in order to support his claim of being a police officer.

Chu further solicited money from Chung, who gave him $4,500.

The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Caroline Yu.
