ICAC officers honoured for outstanding performance

Thirty officers of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) today (Friday) received commendations for their outstanding performances.
Speaking at the ICAC Awards Presentation Ceremony, ICAC Commissioner Alan Lai Nin said the honours were bestowed upon these officers for their unfailing efforts and whole-hearted commitment in accomplishing difficult and sophisticated tasks.
"Despite trying circumstances, you have continued to give your utmost to accomplish our mission to fight corruption, and you deserve our applause," he said.
Four investigators were accorded the Commissioner's Commendation for their outstanding leadership and remarkable investigative abilities in three cases.
Chief Investigator Rebecca Li Bo-lan was commended for unraveling a corruption-facilitated bogus passport scam within three months despite its complexity and cross-boundary nature. Undercover agents had been deployed in the investigation which led to the conviction of a senior customs inspector, two immigration officers and two civilians.
Another award recipient, Chief Investigator Eric Leung To-keung, had demonstrated his perseverance and professional ability in the crackdown of a sophisticated football bookmaking and match fixing syndicate. A police sergeant, five professional footballer s and two civilians were subsequently convicted of offences of corruption, cheating at gambling and illegal bookmaking.
Senior Investigator Joey Lee Chi-leung and Miranda Cheung Ka-po also received the Commissioner's Commendation for their outstanding performance in the investigation involving the Guangnan (Holdings) Ltd. and its subsidiaries. A total of 27 persons had be en charged for a series of alleged Letters of Credit scams involving $1.8 billion in total.
Twenty-five other investigators were awarded the Operations Department Directorate Commendation for their dedicated effort in detecting various cases, including blackmail, misconduct of public office, theft of burial properties as well as passport sale an d human smuggling.
Deputy Chief Product Development Officer Winnie Yip Hau-yi was awarded the Director of Community Relations’ Commendation for her outstanding performance in the enhancement of the ICAC Corporate Website earlier this year.
Since its re-launch in July, the Website has accumulated over eight million hits in less than three months.
Mr Lai also presented souvenirs to three other ICAC officers who were earlier awarded ICAC medals by the Chief Executive.
Assistant Director of Operations Gilbert Chan Tak-shing had been awarded the ICAC Medal for Distinguished Service (IDS) while Principal Investigators Louis Cheung Wah-pong and George Yiu Cheuk-wah received the ICAC Medals for Meritorious Service (IMS).
Meanwhile, 42 officers received long service medals for respectively serving the Commission for 18 and 25 years while 35 staff from various ranks were given the 10 Years' ICAC Service Plaque.
Twenty staff members of the general and support grades were awarded the 20 years' or 30 years' Government Meritorious Service Certificates.
