Twelve netted for alleged bribery scam over $1.2m Ocean Park food contracts
2001-11-13
The ICAC yesterday (Monday) arrested 12 persons, including a manager of the Ocean Park, for their alleged involvement in a bribery scam involving $1.2 million worth of maintenance and food supply contracts of the Park.
The other 11 arrestees were managers and partners of seven contractors of the Ocean Park.
The ICAC investigation arose from a corruption complaint, alleging that there were corrupt dealings between the manager of the Ocean Park and a number of contractors in the award of Ocean Park contracts.
Subsequent enquiries revealed that the manager had allegedly manipulated the tendering of a number of Ocean Park contracts by submitting bogus quotations to ensure a desired contractor was offering the lowest bid in each exercise.
Such contracts concerned maintenance works, the purchase of food and beverage, and the operation of food stalls at the Ocean Park.
The manager had allegedly assisted the seven contractors to obtain orders worth over $1.2 million from the Ocean Park through manipulating the quotations.
He was alleged to have accepted from those contractors bribes calculated from the business turnover generated by the contracts.
All the arrestees - 10 men and two women - have been released on ICAC bail.
The management of the Ocean Park has provided full co-operation during the investigation.
Enquiries into the corruption allegation are continuing.
