Extradition of ICAC suspect
2001-11-20
“We had to be on full alert.... I had to accompany him even when he visited the toilet,” an ICAC senior investigator told of his 19-hour sleepless flight escorting a suspect back to Hong Kong.
In the latest report of the “I-Files” , Senior Investigator Hermann Chan Mui-hing recalled his experience, together with another ICAC investigator, of extraditing from the United States a suspect who was involved in a short-piling corruption case in Hong Kong.
He recounted the moment the suspect bade farewell to his wife at a New York Airport and when the fugitive shared his innermost feelings with him during the long flight.
A brief introduction on extradition procedures and some previous cases are also featured in the report.
The report has been uploaded onto the ICAC corporate website ( http://www.icac.org.hk ) under “Inside Investigations” for public access.
