2001-11-30
A Mainland citizen awaiting the Court of Final Appeal's ruling on his claim of right of abode in Hong Kong was arrested by the ICAC yesterday for allegedly offering $20,000 to an Immigration Officer to obtain a Hong Kong identity card.
Hung Shun-yick, 40, will be brought to Eastern Court tomorrow (Saturday) morning to face a bribery charge.
Hung, who travelled earlier to Hong Kong on a two-way permit, filed an application for right of abode in the territory in June 2001.
While making an application for personal immigration data to support his claim for temporary stay in Hong Kong at the Immigration Department, Hung was alleged to have offered $20,000 to the officer in charge for the latter’s assistance in obtaining an identity card.
The officer reported the matter to his senior officer. The case was referred to the ICAC by the Immigration Department.
Thorough co-operation has been given by the Immigration Department during the ICAC investigation.
Hung is being remanded at the ICAC, pending his court appearance tomorrow.
