Former bank manager faces court for allegedly accepting $500,000 loan over granting of credit facilities

A former bank manager, charged by the ICAC for allegedly accepting a $500,000 loan in relation to the granting of credit facilities to a trading company, appeared in Eastern Court today (Friday).
Wan Charn-leung, 37, former business manager of the Bank of East Asia Limited, faced one count of accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(b) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
No plea was taken. Magistrate Mr Ian Candy adjourned the case until February 8, 2002, pending transfer to District Court.
The charge alleged that on June 3, 1999, Wan had accepted a $500,000 loan as a reward for showing favour to Gain Source Industrial Limited (Gain Source) in relation to the granting and/or review of credit facilities to Gain Source.
Wan was granted cash bail of $50,000. He was also ordered not to leave Hong Kong, and to inform the ICAC of any change of address within 24 hours.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Choi Shu-keung.
