Bogus policeman charged over alleged $600,000 swindle

A restaurant worker, who had allegedly posed as a Detective Police Sergeant to swindle about $600,000 from a woman, was today (Tuesday) charged by the ICAC with two fraud offences.
Leung Yiu-pong, 34, currently on ICAC bail, will appear at Shatin Court at 9:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday) .
The charges alleged Leung, with intent to defraud, of inducing a woman to lend him $598,900 in total, by falsely representing that he was a serving police officer, and that he needed money to pay for the medical bill of a relative and for investment in re staurant business in Guangzhou on the Mainland.
The alleged offences took place between January and August 2001.
The case arose from a corruption complaint alleging that a police officer might have solicited unauthorised loans.
